<itunes:subtitle>IBM and Association for Computing Machinery are the lead sponsors for the International Collegiate Programming Contest, also known as the "Battle of the Brains" software competition. Three-person teams from universities around the world mix creativity with information technology (IT) to produce answers to real world problems. The Battle of the Brains has grown to be the largest and most prestigious computer competition of its kind. It is expected to include tens of thousands of students from universities in 82 countries on six continents. Since IBM began sponsoring the Contest in 1997, participation has grown from 1,100 to 6,100 teams.</itunes:subtitle>

With the World Finals firmly in site, IBM Sponsorship Executive Doug Heintzman highlights some the 100 teams representing 33 countries competing this year’s Battle of the Brains. He also shared some insight into some of the cool things past contestants have accomplished at IBM and how this contest impacts students. We know a lot of contestants are thinking about their career after college. So, for a future podcast, we plan to invite one or two former contestants to offer tips about what to expect at the World Finals and beyond.

Also, for a future podcast, IBM is considering an interview with a team coach. If you have a coach you’d like to suggest, please email a 50-word description explaining how your coach helped bring out the best in you. Make sure you ask your coach if he or she is okay with the nomination before sending it in.

<itunes:summary>With the World Finals firmly in site, IBM Sponsorship Executive Doug Heintzman highlights some the 100 teams representing 33 countries competing this year's Battle of the Brains.

If you have a coach you'd like to suggest, please email a 50-word description explaining how your coach helped bring out the best in you. Make sure you ask your coach if he or she is okay with the nomination before sending it in.</itunes:summary>

So, he makes a great fit for these updates. As we move ahead in 2008, we may try to sprinkle in a team coach or two or another IBM executive who talk more about a particular aspect of the contest. But Doug will be our main guy.

In the December podcast, Doug offers updates some of the early finalists for the World Finals. He also provided more detail about what the competition works so hard to accomplish, particularly highlighting the use of open source software and offered examples of some of the ‘real world’ problems students are charged with solving.

Thank you for visiting us! As we continue to expand our podcast series for the ACM-ICPC Contest, we wanted to make sure the information was easily accessible to everyone around the world. In December, we will re-post the September podcast that launched the series and this year’s Regionals. We will also post a new podcast providing some information about how the Regionals started to unfold. With the 2008 World Finals around the corner, we expect to have a new podcast at least once a month. If you have any questions or comments, we always welcome your feedback. For other news and information, please continue to visit the IBM contest page at www.ibm.com/university/acmcontest/ and ACM-ICPC contest page at icpc.baylor.edu/icpc/. Good luck to all!
